Dental insurance is rising in popularity as an employee
benefit. In part this stems from the overhaul of NHS dentistry
which occurred in the spring of 2006. The two big changes were a
new charging structure and the introduction of new contracts for
dentists, which accelerated their exodus from the state
system.
Both of these changes meant many patients found themselves
paying higher amounts for treatment or were even unable to locate a
dentist.
Unlike plans promoted by dentists, our dental plans impose no
restrictions on which dentists may be used – in fact,
claims can be accepted for treatment received whilst
travelling abroad. Also, because they are group plans, no
examinations are required prior to joining and there is no
moratorium on claiming.
We offer a number of levels of cover - base plans
generally refund the costs of NHS dentistry, and the higher premium
plans reimburse increasing amounts towards the cost of private
treatment.
This approach fits with the unregulated nature of dental
charging and helps the employer to pick the cover suited to
geographical variations.
Premiums are modest in comparison with the real benefits that
arise – employees will generally see some return from dental
insurance each year through check ups, even if no treatment is
required.
By encouraging regular check ups, absenteeism arising from
emergency dental treatment may reduce and improved oral hygiene
occur.
